The re-entry of former councillor of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar into Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday has raised doubts on sitting BJP MLA from Vasco Carlos Almeida receiving ticket to contest the 2022 assembly election.

Salkar joined the BJP along with a large number of supporters in the presence of state BJP president Sadanand Tanawade and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant at the party’s city headquarters.

Almeida was elected Vasco legislator in 2012 and 2017; second time, Almeida won against Salkar – an independent candidate – by just over 1,000 votes.

Sawant said many leaders and workers, hailing from Pernem to Canacona, will be joining BJP in the coming days.

“This will strengthen the party,” he added, pointing out that the progress and development of Goa carried out by his government, during past two-and-a-half years will bring the BJP back to power.

Tanawade said many parties, from West Bengal and from Delhi, are now arriving in Goa to open shop.

“However, the BJP has got permanent shops in Goa and need not worry,” he added.

Indicating that the entry of Salkar in BJP is crucial for the party to win the Vasco constituency, the state BJP chief said BJP will win from all four constituencies in Mormugao taluka, namely Vasco, Mormugao, Dabolim and Cortalim.

Tanawade said Salkar had moved away from the BJP due to some differences with the party.

“He has good support of the people and lost the 2017 assembly polls by just 1,000 votes as an independent candidate,” he observed.

Salkar said even though he left the BJP to contest the 2017 election as an independent candidate, he or his supporters never uttered any ill about the BJP as it was doing good work in the state. Minister for Panchayati Raj Mauvin Godinho and city MLA Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monseratte were also present on the occasion.
