Goa witnessed 2,375 road accidents in 2020

Goa witnessed 2,375 road accidents that left 224 dead and 875 injured in 2020.

As per the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), dangerous driving and overspeeding have accounted for almost 99 per cent of the road accidents and close to 96 per cent of the fatalities.

Due to dangerous or careless driving, 1,357 accidents occurred in 2020 wherein 103 persons died and 514 were injured. Similarly, due to overspeeding, 981 accidents were reported that led to 112 deaths and 343 sustaining injuries.

In eleven accidents that resulted in a fatality and seven sustaining injuries, drivers were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Apart from this, 13 accidents were reported due to animal crossings, leading to four fatalities and as many persons getting injured.

Three accidents occurred due to vehicles parked on road shoulders in which three persons lost their lives, while one person died in accidents caused due to other reasons.

The NCRB data also reveals that majority of the road accidents deaths in 2020 occurred in rural areas wherein 172 persons perished, while 52 lost their lives in accidents that occurred in urban areas.

Of the 224 who died in road accidents, 197 were males and 27 females.

Majority of those who died in road accidents in 2020 were either two-wheeler riders or pillion riders.

As per the statistics, 75 persons died and 273 sustained injuries in accidents that occurred on national highways, while 34 lost their lives and 125 suffered injuries in accidents that took place on state highways. A total of 115 persons died in accidents that occurred on other roads.
