VMC team inspects municipal buildings

Valpoi: As a part of audit and accountability, newly elected council members inspected all the properties of Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) on Monday.

The special team led by vice-chairperson Anil Katkar, which included councillors Idris Shaikh, Vinod Haldankar, Vaciyudin Sayyed, and officials Tanvir Khan and Shivaji Gawas inspected all the premises, including vegetable and fruit market,  commercial complex, fish market and market complex located at various places in the town.

The inspection was carried out to find lapses in the functioning, and for adopting  improvement measures to be taken at all the municipal buildings.

According to a source, the inspection was initiated after the civic body received several complaints from the shopkeepers over unhygienic conditions prevailing at the few premises.

“It was our first inspection to carry out a local structural audit. The team visited all the buildings and found that improvements are much needed, especially, cleaning of toilets on regular basis and functioning of lift at the commercial complex” said Shaikh who further informed that the VMC will be taking a decision to impose fine of Rs 500 on those spitting in the public.

“Another important decision, the VMC is going to take is the auctioning of shops. Around 20 to 30 shops will be auctioned which will generate revenue for the VMC.  Decision pertaining to auctioning and re-auctioning of shops will be taken during the council meeting which will be held on Tuesday,” he said.
