As expected councillor Vishwas Sawant was on Thursday elected as the new chairperson of Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) by 9:6 votes.

The special meeting for the election purpose was held at the municipal hall, and was presided over by Johnson Fernandes in the presence of chief officer Ajay Gaude. All the 15 councillors attended the meeting. Out of the 3 councillors, who had filed the nomination for the post of the chairperson, Pramod Naik withdrew his nomination before 15 minutes of the election.

During the secret ballot,  Vishwas Sawant got 9 votes while the opposition councilor Mangaldas Ghadi got 6 votes.

The nine BJP councillors include Vishwas Sawant, vice chairperson Rucha Vast, Jasmine Braganza, Reema Alise, Yolanda Pereira, Carmelina Morise, Pramod Naik, Damodar Bhende and Tony Cutinho.

Opposition group includes Balkrishna Hodarkar, Pradip Naik, Sushant Naik, Mangaldas Ghadi, Clementina Fernandes and Aparna Prabhudessai.

Speaking to media persons, new chairperson Vishwas Sawant said that “all the 9 councillors will remain united and will work for the development of the council area.”

Replying to a question, he said that regarding the tenure period, nothing yet has been decided. “We shall sit and sort out the issue.

MLA Nilesh Cabral alleged that the “opposition group, supported by some vested interest, is trying to create a rift between the BJP councillors since the municipal elections. But finally, they failed in their efforts and the BJP councillors emerged victorious. Now, immediately, the pre-monsoon work will be undertaken ward-wise and will unitedly work for the development of the municipal area.”

In the meantime, during a press conference, organised by the opposition group, Balkrishna Hodarkar said that “in fact we wanted that all the 15 councillors should remain united and work for the municipality. After my election as chairperson, the councillors were pressurised and a no confidence motion was moved within a short time.”

“When I was removed from the post, we still wanted that all the 15 councillors should remain united. With this intention in mind we had supported councillor Pramod D Naik to be chairperson of CCMC. Pramod Naik had even filed the nomination but he was pressurised to withdraw his nomination as somebody wanted that the council should not remain united,” he alleged.

He further said that “he has congratulated the new chairperson Vishwas Sawant, and we shall always support him in the welfare work but we shall oppose tooth and nail if he supports illegal activities.”
