Ten-day lockdown in Calangute, Candolim

Candolim: The coastal villages of Candolim, Calangute and Arpora-Nagoa in Bardez taluka where the coronavirus cases are on a rise will go in for a ten-day lockdown from April 29.

Buckling under public pressure, the village panchayats of Candolim, Calangute and Arpora-Nagoa Wednesday decided in a joint meeting held with the local MLA and locals to go in for a ten-day lockdown from Thursday.

As per the decisions arrived at during the meet, movement of the general public in these villages will be restricted during the ten-day period. Hotels have been instructed to cancel their bookings, while all wedding receptions stand cancelled. Religious functions in the three villages will be organised with only 20 persons. Government employees residing in the three villages have been requested to either reside at some other place during the ten-day period or travel with an identity card.

The number of active cases under the jurisdiction of the primary health centre of Candolim is 1,436, which is the second highest in Goa after Margao.

In a press conference held with sarpanchas and panch members of Candolim, Calangute and Arpora-Nagoa, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that in an emergency meeting held they decided to go in for a lockdown in the coastal villages, as the cases in the beach belt are rising exponentially and the villagers are demanding a lockdown.

Lobo said he has written to the Chief Minister and the District Collector in this regard. He said people in the villages need not panic, as all essential commodities will be available from 6 am to 12 pm.

Stating that the lone ambulance available with the panchayats remains busy and locals are unable to get an ambulance to shift patients to hospitals in cases of emergency, Lobo said attempts are being made to arrange private ambulances to give relief to the people of the villages.

Meanwhile, sarpanch of Calangute panchayat Shawn Martins said all hotels have been informed not to accept any new bookings for ten days. “Villagers have been asked to cancel all wedding receptions,” he said.

Candolim sarpanch Blaize Fernandes said due to a rise in the COVID cases in Candolim, the vaccination drive was held on the football ground and not at the primary health centre.
