Panaji: Even as police have stepped up enforcement pertaining to the COVID-19 guidelines, a senior cop on Tuesday said police have been asked to be cautious and take precautionary measures as 41 police personnel have tested positive for the virus in the last two days.
On Monday, 21 police personnel tested positive, while on Tuesday, 20 more contracted the infection. Since the last year, over 1,000 police personnel have tested positive for the virus, said sources.
A senior police officer said that instructions have been given to police officials to strictly enforce and penalise people found without a face mask in public places. Emphasis will also be laid on maintaining social distancing, the officer said. Police have been asked to take precautions especially while performing duty on the field.
According to police officials, business establishments are strictly adhering to the night curfew, which is in force from 10 pm to 6 am. Police are also conducting checks in this regard, said the officials. Nakabandi points have been set up at various locations and people in general are adhering to the government guidelines on night curfew.
Since January this year, police have penalised over 50,000 persons for not wearing a face mask in public places. The fine for not wearing a face mask is Rs 200.
