Panaji: Onion prices in the wholesale market have crashed and it is being sold between Rs 17-Rs 19 a kg. The wholesalers expect prices to go further down in the coming weeks.
There are three qualities of onions available in the market and that which is of best quality is being sold at higher rates. While the old stock or the slightly damaged or not so dry ones are sold at lower prices.
But in retail, onions were being sold between Rs 25 to Rs 30 a kg in Panaji municipal market on Tuesday due to various reasons.
These reasons are: transportation, loading-unloading costs, sopo charges, GST, labour and other expenses, besides commission and profits.
The wholesalers informed that the onion stock comes from Nashik and Kolhapur in Maharashtra and from Belgaum and Bijapur in Karnataka where onion is grown in bulk and mostly grown for exports and not for local consumption.
Wholesalers Dharmendra Bhagat and Amonkar said that the prices should have been between Rs 14-15 a kg but due to lockdown the prices have remained static for a week.
Transporters are facing a lot of issues due to rising cases of coronavirus in Goa as well as in Maharashtra and Karnataka but “still we are supplying the commodity to our valued customers by risking our drivers’ lives,” said a transporter.
While wholesalers as well as farmers are facing problems due to shortage of loaders in the markets due to the pandemic.
