Grocery stores in Porvorim remain abuzz with customers

With state being put into a partial lockdown since Thursday night, in Porvorim, people were seen moving about mostly making trips to grocery shops, super markets to buy basic kitchen requirements on Friday. However, there was no gathering of labourers seen in the labour market opposite Goa police housing colony on Friday morning.

Vans supplying milk, bread, besides grocery items, were seen at various shops in Porvorim areas.

Usual sight of poder (cycle-bound bread sellers), fishermen and vegetable vendors was missing in Porvorim in the initial hours of the day, but as the day progressed the mobility of people gathered momentum and soon there were people moving on the roads with their two-wheelers, four-wheelers and even passengers were noticed waiting for Kadamba transport.

There were customers at the shops in Journalist colony following social distancing and buying basic necessities while at a bakery too there was a rush of customers in the morning hours. Except for provisional stores, all other shops were closed for the public and as such the whole area was looking deserted through most of the day.

On the CHOGM road, where there is a lot of movement of people due to different types of eateries which are located there, frequented by youngsters, but with Section 144 being in force the daily crowd has been a miss and with the lockdown and police deployed at important spots, the busy road stretch is devoid of the usual buzz these days.

A lot of business community members welcomed the partial lockdown by the government aimed at controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection, while few others felt it made no sense in allowing certain establishments to remain open if there was no public movement allowed.
