In what could potentially come as a huge relief to garbage management and disposing of thousands of diapers from landfill sites, Dramapur resident Godfrey Franklyn is turning waste into fertilizer.

Franklyn has so far treated and disposed of over 7,000 kgs of diapers from Navelim panchayat area.

Franklyn, speaking exclusively to this daily, informed diapers remain a major garbage problem all over the world and finds its way into garbage landfill sites or burnt in incinerators.

“After prolonged research, I found a way to break the silicon and extract the liquids and transform it into fertilizer while the other parts of the diapers are recyclable,” he said.

He said that a village like Navelim alone generates around 5,000 kgs of waste. He said that the process is labour-centric and very strenuous. He stated that he is also in contact with Dramapur-Sirlim, Sarzora, Camurlim, and Carmona panchayats to tackle the diapers and other garbage through his eco-green corporation.

Franklin informed that he had started with compostable and biodegradable bags before venturing into garbage management, adding, “Research is on to find a way to recycle sanitary pads.”

He said that he has moved a proposal to Goa Solid Waste Management as the technology will go a long way to solve Goa›s garbage issue.

He said that a lakh and half kgs of diapers are generated each day across the state and to dispose them scientifically, support from the government is
needed.
