Ferryboat worker drowns

Ponda: In a tragic incident, an employee of the river navigation department working on the Cortalim-Marcaim ferryboat drowned after he and two others ventured into the river to fix a minor fault in the ferryboat late Sunday night.

The deceased man has been identified as Akshay alias Sitaram Mulvi (40), a resident of Gaune Bandora in Ponda taluka.

Police said that Mulvi and two of his colleagues had got into the river to disentangle a rope that had entangled to the fan of the ferryboat. After completing the work, two crewmembers came out of the water, but Mulvi went missing. Consequently a search was launched to trace him with the help of  Navy divers and firefighters.

Mulvi was found dead beneath the ferryboat in the afternoon.

Police registered an unnatural death in the case.
