Like every other individual, who might have received a random call from cyber criminals, who under some or the other pretext would seek debit/credit card or Aadhaar details, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant too had received such a phishing call.
Under the pretext of bank account being suspended, unknown caller had sought Aadhaar number of Sawant without realising who he was.
However, Sawant did not share any details.
Sawant said awareness is the key to remain safe from such frauds.
He was speaking after inaugurating the state-of-the-art cyber forensic lab cum training centre for Goa police under the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) programme.
“Crime against women and children won’t be tolerated and strict action will be taken, for which under the state purview, we are working on to make changes in the IPC and will do it soon”, said Sawant.
Referring to the various incidents of cyber crimes, he said even he had received a call from an unknown number asking for Aadhaar number failing which the caller told him that the bank account will be suspended.
“I was in Delhi when I received the call. The caller asked for the Aadhaar number or else he said that the bank account will be suspended. I was surprised… even I unknowingly checked my wallet for my Aadhaar number but then I realised and did not share the number. This can happen to anyone… that is why awareness on cyber crimes is very important”, he said. Everyone needs to be alert and people should not share details of their debit/credit card, Aadhaar card or PAN number, Sawant said.
He also spoke on various job scams. He said there was a case wherein a person approached a government department with a fake job call letter even before the interviews were conducted.
“Youth have to be alert. There are fake job call letter incidents and I have received such complaints. People have approached me telling that they got a job offer letter from a central government department and were asked to pay Rs 10 lakh. Even if I tell them it is fake, and not to deposit money…some were even depositing money and later repented”, said Sawant.
He also asked people to lodge complaints if any before the local police or the cyber crime police pertaining to cyber crimes. Cyber criminal are getting innovative and are using the technology to commit cyber crimes.
“We need to be alert and create awareness on various cyber crimes,” said he.
Sawant said, “Last year, 24 cases were registered out which 14 were detected while the investigation is on in 10 remaining cases. Similarly, this year, 16 cases have been registered, out of which 10 cases were detected and 6 cases are under investigation. It is good ratio of detection.”
