Crop damage: Guirim farmers yet to receive ‘compensation’

Guirim: Guirim farmers are upset for not having received compensation as promised by the Chief Minster over the crop damage following flooding caused due to haphazard construction of national highway near Green Park.

The aid was to be released through the Chief Ministers’ Relief Fund to 180-odd farmers from Guirim.

Speaking to this daily, the farmers from Guirim told that they have not received the compensation for the crop damage, caused by flooding following the haphazard construction work of the national highway that blocked the cross drains and nullas near the Green Park.

Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar had conducted the inspection,  and the Chief Minister had assured the farmers that he would pay compensation to the farmers for the crop damage, they said.

Sunny Nanodkar, a panchayat member of Guirim said that the village panchayat of Guirim had written to the Chief Minister and the local MLA on flooding at Green Park caused due to the construction work of the national highway. 

“Cross drains and nullas were blocked, which led to flooding, resulting in crop damage in Guirim,  Servem, Vancio, and Komyamorod wards,” he said.

“When the Chief Minister had come to take stock of flooding at Green Park, he had met the farmers, and at that point of time he had promised that he would give compensation through the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund but here BJP workers are playing politics and giving cheques only to their supporters. Only 11 farmers have received compensation, out of so many farmers,” he added.

Ramesh Lingutkar, one of the affected farmers, said that “only 11 farmers, out of 180 have received compensation, and in that some are not affected at all but they were paid compensation as they are BJP workers. There should not be any politics.  The farmers have lost their crop due to flooding caused by the haphazard work of the national highway. The Chief Minister had promised that Rs 5,000 would be given to farmers whose crop was damaged but till date, we have not received any money. I have spoken to the ZP member but he is only giving assurances. Cheques are given only to BJP workers whose crop was damaged.” 

Meanwhile, when questioned panch member of Guirim Fondu Naik, who was entrusted  with the payment to the farmers said that 25 cheques have been distributed to farmers of Guirim, and another 25 cheques are yet to be received.
