Cong delegation urges Governor to dismiss Sawant government

Leaders express concern over collapse of law and order

Panaji: A delegation of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) led by its president Girish Chodankar and including leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat and GPCC working president Aleixo Sequeira met Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai on Tuesday and expressed concern over the precarious law and order situation in the state.

The delegation also demanded that the Governor dismiss the Pramod Sawant government and take over the reins of the state administration.

Furthermore, the delegation handed over a detailed memorandum to the Governor citing large number of crimes, including gang wars, robberies, murders and rapes, which have taken place in the state since June 2020.

Later, Kamat speaking to the pressmen, said the government has failed dismally to provide protection and security to Goans, especially to the women in the state. “Goa has virtually become a crime hub,” he added.

The GPCC president stated that the crimes taking place in Goa are directly linked to drugs and gambling. He also added that the investigation machinery has been compromised by Sawant, who also holds the Home portfolio, as “most of the criminals involved in these crimes are closely linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

The memorandum handed over to the Governor included large number of crimes of serious nature, which were recorded in Goa since last year including gang war killing at St Cruz, murder of a jeweller in Margao, setting ablaze a resident of Porvorim, brutal double murder at Fatorda, rape of a minor girl at Bicholim, suicide of three family members at Zuarinagar alleging police harassment, daylight murder at Bogmolo, rape of two minor girls at Benaulim beach, a rape incident at Usgao, abduction of a Goa businessman for ransom, rape of another minor girl at Sattari, robbery in a jewellery shop at Mapusa, a dead body of a girl found on the Calangute beach with suspicion of murder, kidnapping and rape of a minor girl from Sattari, mysterious deaths of two Russian women in North Goa, attempt to abduct a young girl at Ponda, rape of a six-year-old girl by her own father, a police constable beating his wife on the national highway, and an attack on a doctor, among others.

Stating that the Pramod Sawant government has no right to stay in power, Chodankar said the criminals are not being arrested by the police due to their proximity to the ruling party.
