A 49-year-old seaman, a resident of Seraulim, died in a self accident while his family members, including a 10-year-old child, escaped with minor
injuries.
The mishap occurred on Tuesday morning, said Margao police.
The police said that the car driver lost control over the vehicle at a speedbreaker and it resulted in the vehicle crashing into an electricity pole. He was taken to Margao Hospicio hospital, however, doctor on duty declared him dead.
Police sub inspector Stanley Gomes, who is investigating the case, disclosed the name of the deceased as Vernon Fernandes. The 10-year-old child, who is among the injured, has suffered shoulder injuries, the police said.
The accident, according to Margao police, took place near Rawanfond in front of MES gate when the car was proceeding from Margao towards Sao Jose de Areal area.
Margao police said that the mishap took place at around 9 am wherein the speeding car also damaged a parked rickshaw, three two-wheelers, besides a roadside tea stall, sweet mart and an electricity pole.
A large number of people rushed to the spot after hearing the news of the accident.
The body of the deceased was handed over to the family members after conducting postmortem examination. Police said that the case has been treated as a self-accident.
Police said that the damage caused to other vehicles in the accident was yet to be known.
The ill-fated car and other vehicles involved in the mishap were taken to the police station. “We will get details from owners of the three two-wheelers and rickshaw that are damaged in the accident. The electricity department will be informed about the pole damage,” said the police.
