The newly-elected chairperson of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Lyndon Pereira, on Thursday, said he will work hard to provide people-friendly and clean administration.
Pereira was elected as chairperson and Deepali Sawal as vice chairperson following an election held on Thursday.
Speaking to media after officially being elected chairperson of Margao Municipal Council, Pereira said his dream has come true. “I will work hard to provide people-friendly and a clean administration. All files will be cleared within 15 days’ time. My priority would be to tackle Sonsoddo waste issue. I will work in tandem with all 25 councillors and now the focus will be on pre-monsoon works,” he said.
Pereira, while thanking his mentor Vijai Sardesai and Digambar Kamat for having him in the chairperson’s post, said the pending work of multi-storey parking project would be taken up by refloating the tender.
Presiding officer Srineth Kothwale carried out the process of electing the chairperson and vice chairperson.
Since there were single nominations of Pereira and Deepali Sawal, both were declared elected. The oath of the office was administered to all the councillors. Margao Civic Alliance (MCA) formed by two legislators – Kamat and Sardesai – had won 17 seats of the total 25.
Kamat-backed Model Margao group secured eight and Sardesai’s Fatorda Forward got nine seats. While Pereira is of Fatorda Forward, Sawal belongs to Model Margao group.
However, two of the eight councillors of Kamat backed group – Damodar Shirodkar and Ghaneshyam Shirodkar have expressed their lament at the decision of the legislator Kamat.
Meanwhile, ruling councillors along with their leaders went to the historic Lohia Maidan to pay tributes to Ram Manohar Lohia who fought for the state’s freedom.
Speaking at the site, Sardesai criticised the government for deliberately delaying the beautification work of Lohia Maidan which was initiated by him when he was a minister in the BJP government headed by
Manohar Parrikar.
He also alleged that the government did not provide doctors and nurses for COVID care centres proposed by him, instead the medical manpower was deployed at other village-level COVID centres.
Kamat said he is assuring the people of Margao that the present council will be transparent and provide corruption-free
administration.
