The state election commission (SEC) is likely to announce the date for the general election to five municipal councils of Mapusa, Margao, Mormugao, Quepem and Sanguem on Tuesday.

The poll body has convened a press conference on Tuesday afternoon in Panaji where State Election Commissioner W V Ramanamurthy is expected to announce the date and the schedule for the elections.

It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court had, in its verdict, upheld the order of the High Court, which had set aside the notification for ward reservation in these five municipalities while observing that the state government had not followed the constitutional mandate while undertaking the process.

In its verdict, the top court had directed the government and SEC to complete

the election process of these five civic bodies by April 30.

Later, the SEC declared the election process for the affected municipal councils as null and void and also declared the election certificates issued to unopposed candidates as invalid.

The state government has on Sunday already notified April 23 as the day for the by-elections to ward II of village panchayat of Karapur-Sarvan in Bicholim and ward IV of village panchayat of Velim in Salcete.
